You don’t normally see a rusted dashboard, but this one is around the instrumentation and the steering column that is fitted with an Olds 442 steering wheel. Most of it may clean up well, but you’ve gotta love that look to want to keep it. It’s said that this SS clone has many real SS parts, like GM A-body bucket seats, but they’re just the beginning of a strange looking motif in the passenger compartment. The rear end has posi-traction and fitted with new 4:11 gears (but how new is new?). The seller says the TH-350 automatic transmission is also good. We’re told that the 350 cubic inch V8 under the hood was tested last year with a new carburetor and is said to have run well then. The vinyl top is gone and what was under it has rotted – badly. The body may or may not be holding up depending on where you look, but the roof is a big problem. This is not the only vehicle that seems to be slowly deteriorating in that yard its company at a minimum looks like a 1953-54 Plymouth, 1971-72 Pontiac Ventura, mid-70s full-size Buick, 1964 Buick Electra 225, and a couple of Chevy work trucks. With its flat tires, this ’68 El Camino has been serving as lawn art and a place to store firewood (which will be removed when the pickup is taken away). However, time and Mother Nature have not been kind to the truck, likely due to it sitting outside for what is probably a long time. At some point, we surmise this SS clone was quite the looker, with a black paint job, vinyl top, custom stripes and aftermarket wheels. Apparently, that number disappointed Chevy execs so it became an option through 1972. Unfortunately, out of more than 41,700 of the pickups built that year, just under 5,200 were Super Sports. The 1968 model year would see the El Camino SS for the first time as a standalone model. Our thanks to Larry D for turning this one up for us! Sitting in a field in Holland, New York, this Chevy is available here on eBay for the Buy It Now price of $1,699. This ’68 edition was converted (in some respects) to a Super Sport clone, but with modifications like fuzzy interior components. From 1964, it had been based on a mid-size platform and would remain in the portfolio through 1987. By 1968, the El Camino was in its third generation since joining Chevy’s line-up as a “gentleman’s” pickup.

When a traumatic event feels long in hindsight, people may feel that the trauma is much closer in the rearview mirror than it is in reality. See all our coverage of the coronavirus pandemic Most respondents, 57 percent, said that the preceding 12 months felt longer than a year. Only 9 percent said the preceding 12 months felt precisely like a year, while 34 percent said that time felt shorter, the researchers wrote in July in PLOS One. Ogden and her team asked almost 800 respondents in the United Kingdom to reflect on the start of the pandemic a year after it started. In a similar line of work, experimental psychologist Ruth Ogden of Liverpool John Moores University in England and colleagues are seeking to understand how people might eventually remember the pandemic, and what that could mean for recovery. For instance, respondents who reported that time felt like it was going very slowly also reported higher levels of loneliness, researchers reported in August in Nature Human Behaviour. Other recent research during the pandemic suggests that those experiencing time as moving more slowly seem to struggle with greater mental distress than those who experience time as moving fast. Now Holman hopes that measuring how much people feel like time is falling apart during the pandemic might provide an early indicator of who might need help with recovery. They couldn’t put together the flow from past to present to future,” she says. “People who experienced temporal disintegration … got stuck in that past experience. She found that two years later, the individuals who had lost their sense of time during the fires still reported feeling greater distress than those who had largely kept their temporal bearings. For her dissertation, she interviewed survivors of the southern California fires of 1993 within days of the fires’ onset. Holman first observed how a warped sense of time can hurt people’s well-being as a graduate student in the 1990s. Previous life experience, including preexisting mental health challenges and high levels of lifetime stress or trauma, also heightened one’s likelihood of feeling out of sync. Those who reported greater feelings of time distortion, and thus may be at higher risk of developing mental health problems, included participants ages 18 to 29 and women. For others, the trauma of the past few years combined with this weird perception of time is a worrisome mix: They could be at risk of lingering mental health problems, Holman says. “All of a sudden everything went on stop.… We could not be the people we were used to being in the world anymore,” says health psychologist Alison Holman of the University of California, Irvine.įor some people, distortions in time may feel like a strange, somewhat unsettling phenomenon, but one they can shake off. Days felt as if they were blurring together, the present loomed overly large and the future felt uncertain, researchers reported in August in Psychological Trauma: Theory, Research, Practice and Policy. Early findings from those efforts now confirm that the pandemic did lead many people worldwide to experience distortions in their perception of time.įor instance, two surveys of more than 5,600 people taken during the first six months of the pandemic in the United States showed that roughly two-thirds of respondents reported feeling strangely out of sync. Since the initial shutdowns, cognitive neuroscientists and psychologists have been scrambling to document people’s changing relationship with the clock. Our time is typically punctuated by events, such as dinner dates or daily commutes, Grondin and his team wrote in October 2020 in Frontiers in Psychology. Days melted together, then weeks, then years.Īs people began wondering about why time felt so out of whack, Simon Grondin, a psychologist at Laval University in Quebec City, and colleagues penned a theory paper seeking to explain the phenomenon. The word captured that sense of time disintegrating as our worlds and routines turned upside down ( SN: 9/14/20). Welcome to “blursday.” Back when the pandemic started, the term hit the zeitgeist. Since being tipped in the comments section on one of our MacBook Pro articles, weve been keeping our eyes on a particular utility developed by independent OS X developer Cody Krieger called. They will be listed in the menu section that shows which card is used. If you are noticing the computer switching to power-hungry discrete graphics and can’t figure out what application might be causing this, the app will give you a list of which programs cause the switch from the drop down menu. You might want the latter when you are running low on battery life but can’t plug-in. That makes the hardware solution less desirable for a working MacBook. This can increase performance when plugged in and increase battery life when unplugged. There are preferences which allow you to tell it to set the graphics card to the less battery hungry integrated graphics when your computer is unplugged or to automatically turn on the more powerful discrete graphics card when you are plugged into power. Then simply click on your username on Reddit, go to the comments tab, scroll down as far as possible (hint:use RES ), and hit the new OVERWRITE button at the top. The drop down menu gives options including selection of the Intel only, AMD or NVIDIA only or Dynamic Switching, which is the default for the MacBook Pro and lets the computer decide automatically. It is a free app which you can get from the developer’s website. gfxcardstatus is a lightweight utility that runs in your menu bar and tells you exactly when that happens with on-screen notification. It is nice to know when the higher powered discrete graphics card is being used. The benefit is higher power when needed, but lower power consumption on the integrated graphics for ordinary tasks. Integrated graphics are for ordinary applications like Microsoft Word and a Twitter client. From an automotive analogy think of dynamic switching graphics as switching to four-wheel drive when driving off-road and two-wheel drive for driving around town. A high-powered gaming card is for more intense applications like Photoshop or Call of Duty. Having dynamic switching graphics is like being able to open the computer and put in a different graphics card for different scenarios, except you don’t have to dissect your MacBook Pro. The difference between integrated and discrete graphics is power – both consumption and horsepower to get work done. When your system needs a lot of graphics processing power for things like video encoding, picture editing or especially gaming, the computer switches from lowered powered integrated graphics to higher powered discrete graphics. The MacBook Pro has what is called switchable or dynamic switching graphics. You may also use gfxCardStatus to avoid switching to the dGPU as far as possible. If you ever want to know which graphics card your Apple MacBook Pro is using, then gfxcardstatus is the perfect utility. Long story short, my 2011 macbook pro has the dreaded logic board issue. That makes the hardware solution less desirable for a working MacBook. With that hardware solution you will also have to take an extra step, as it will disable brightness control. The software part is of course reversible, and the hardware part of course not. That solution provided by dosdude1 is a combined package of software and hardware. I dont care if none of us actually had cabinets, there would be a couple of them on site, and everything would get tested on those as well as desktops If i was selling a commercial pin sim product, the last thing i would let my dev team do is break cabinet use. OK, I get that Steam's forum system has really bad controls, no good way to moderate, and is otherwise broken in less than useful ways, but all it takes is having someone do a drive-by post of, "oh, hey, we're aware of the problem," that would have made a big difference. Well, that is a shame that a commercial product is going to use facebook and discord as their official means of supportĪnd also apparently ignore an issue of their own creation. I may install the old VP9 Time Machine just to have it available.ĮDIT: Thanks, Noah, for editing the thread title for me, since I can't personally recommend the software right now.Įdited by LynnInDenver, 21 March 2021 - 04:01 PM. I'm going to need to make sure I have the VPX builds of Zaccaria tables installed over the rest of the weekend, and that should cover the most important tables except Time Machine. Which is sad, but I'm too busy to throw money and time at a company that won't at least use the correct channels to inform people where they're at.ĮDIT: And it's been uninstalled from Radiant Silverball now. The next time I fire up the cabinet, it's probably going to be uninstalled, and I'm not purchasing any more of the DLC for it. And it looks like from those posts that they'd prefer to add some bug squashing of the "not breaking use cases" variety, so it'll have been broken a month or more by the time those of us with cabinet see a fix and can play properly again. mostly on Discord (apparently, I'm not seeking it out now to subscribe just to find this out, I shouldn't have to) and Facebook (which I can at least manage to see), not on the Steam page where they should be focusing the support. If the fix isn't until the next table release, then it's likely that I won't reinstate them on the cabinet, it won't be worth the frustration to me at that point.Įdited by LynnInDenver, 10 March 2021 - 01:34 PM.Īnd I had to dig to find any communication at all from them about the issue. Update: i went ahead and took the entries out of PinUp Popper for the Zaccaria tables for the time being - being able to see them and not play them unless gimped would annoy me too much. And note that I wasn't allowed to run on the cabinet without actually applying the update, which was majorly annoying to me because I'd already heard about the issue. If the fix takes until the next Deluxe table (this last one was three months after the previous release), I might have to consider no longer purchasing Zaccaria tables I already have a large amount of tables on my cabinet, so it's not a big major deal to stop buying tables from one source. I'm personally holding off on purchasing the latest Deluxe table (Combat Deluxe) until it's fixed. dunno if it'll be an update just for that, or when they release the next Deluxe table. As in, it will crash to desktop attempting to play tables. Resurrecting to let everyone know, the last update broke multiscreen support for just about everything BUT Time Machine. Pica can have a wide range of effects depending on what non-food item(s) a person eats. Because it’s compulsive, people with this condition have a very hard time controlling the urge on their own. Pica is a condition where a person compulsively eats things that aren’t food and don’t have any nutritional value. This kind of pica usually goes away on its own very quickly. Yet another reason is that infants and young children often put things in their mouths, which is part of their normal development. This can happen when people don’t tell their doctor about it or don’t report signs of it in their children. It’s also common for healthcare providers to miss the condition entirely. That’s partly because research studies often don’t use the same definition for this condition. Pica is a relatively common condition, but experts aren’t sure exactly how common it is. However, it can cause major problems if a person with this condition eats something toxic or dangerous. Depending on when and why a person does this, pica can be normal, expected and harmless. While the MoltenVK library provides an implementation of Vulkan that operates within Metal, its compatibility is limited. MacOS does not natively support Vulkan, the official successor to OpenGL. It reduces driver overhead and improves multithreading, allowing every CPU thread to send commands to the GPU. Metal reduces CPU load, shifting more tasks to the GPU. Metal makes use of the homogenized hardware by abandoning abstraction layer and running on the "bare metal". As time went on, Apple has shifted its efforts towards building its own hardware platforms for mobile and desktop use. At the time, moving to OpenGL allowed Apple to take advantage of existing libraries that enabled hardware acceleration on a variety of different GPUs. The name changed to Mayhem 3 a few weeks later because gameplay-wise, I thought most previous ideas of Mayhem 2, despite their sometimes poor implementation, were good to be kept. Then I've realized that designing the layout of a galaxy was not that hard, and I've released Stardust, a very early version of the new mod I've always wanted. So for a few years, I had this crazy idea of having procedurally generated galaxies in a game that was not at all made for that. Always having to play in the same galaxy was the main reason why I eventually quit X3. Even though combat in X3 is "ok", I've always felt that it could be greatly improved, not only by overhauling all ship stats and characteristics, but also by changing the AI behavior and rewrite their scripts. Having an empire is about macro management, not micro management. X3 being about managing an empire, it should be intuitive to replace your ships, give them global orders, automatically put them into a fleet, repair them, etc. Products are artificially consumed and the AI does not use them to make their ships or stations. Even though Litcube has changed them quite deeply, the system remained the same: ships were created out of thin air and spawned around shipyards, with very basic goals and poor AI. This is the name of automated ships in X3. I've developed Mayhem 2 for about 4 years (part time, obviously), but at the end I didn't want to play it anymore because of some important problems I had with X3: I also wanted to not make everything orbiting around money, so I've implemented a way to craft your ships, stations, weapons and equipment. I had understood that conquering sectors is not only about changing the race of a sector, it's about all the consequences and the price that you and the AI have to pay to achieve it. I've always loved games where territory war is an important element of gameplay, it gives replayability and an experience often more intense and more customizable than story-based games. Mayhem 1 began one year later with the very primitive idea of making it possible to conquer new sectors. I've started modding X3 in 2014 after the release of Litcube's Universe. It has mostly been a full time job and is today a robust mod, fully playable, and replayable! Mayhem 3 has been in development since December 2019. So while the ELN may finally become a reality in research labs and make us the most efficient scientists of all time (if you buy into the hype), we may never get away from the paper notebook. No matter what else happens, you can always read paper. Make sure to print out a hard copy once in a while. When I informed my PI that I was going to go the ELN route, he offered one piece of advice. With this, all the information pertinent to a project is on the same page. However, it does solve the problem I always faced with a paper notebook in that my projects were always broken up and separated by other projects. My desk is messy enough with random pieces of paper, I don’t need my ELN to look like that too. OneNote does offer an uncategorized page, but I try not to use this. Spend some time and think about how you want to structure your notebook before starting. If you’re not organized, it won’t magically sort and categorize for you. I wouldn’t go into an ELN blindly without having some idea of how you want it organized. Perhaps if I did have an iPad to link to, this would be easier. I can get around that using the paint software, but it’s an extra step. One thing I would have liked, in this software, is the ability to scribble on a page. I still feel the need to keep the original notes, though, and so I keep a binder to put these into. I can probably just enter these after the fact and somehow just make it traceable that these notes were added, perhaps using different font color. This results in more notes scribbled on the fly. Once I’ve planned a project, I generally have to print it out anyways so that it is handy when completing the experiment. I can put links to protocols and databases right into each page, so the information retrieved is always up to date. I also have a notebook for notes from meetings and seminars, and another for the lab management tasks such as ordering supplies, inventory, etc. For instance, I have a project page in my primary cell culture section in my experiment notebook. Within each section, you can have separate pages. You can have several “notebooks” and within each notebook, you have sections. Here’s the basics that I have discovered so far. There’s a lot to know about this software, more than I’ve even touched on so far. I’m in a PC lab and the software is supported by my university and the department. In the end, I decided to go with Microsoft OneNote. Most offer access to your notebooks even when you don’t have access to your laptop, either through cloud storage or linked accounts. Some even offered interfacing between software on your laptop and apps on your tablet or phone. I’m not that crafty and so I focused on the following options. If you’re handy with software and HTML, you can even design your own. I need to be able to access my data for years to come.īy searching “electronic lab notebook”, “ELN”, and “Digital Lab Notebook”, you can quickly become overwhelmed with what is available. These projects take years to complete and small details now may be hugely important later on. I didn’t want to invest time in an ELN, only to have it be obsolete in a couple years and unattainable. That last requirement was a big one for me. My requirements were that it be either free or very inexpensive, easy to use (I’m no computer wiz), support and import many different media formats, and have longevity. I hadn’t even considered an ELN as a possibility, and so I got to work to find the format that would best suit my needs. When I started my new postdoc position a couple of months ago, my PI mentioned that I could choose my own format for my notebook, paper or digital. Not convinced? Jim Giles wrote this news feature on the promise of ELNs. They purportedly make your projects more organized, streamlined, easier to search and share, and ultimately, make research better. These newer versions have a lot of promise. They are the new corner dealers, some might say. They offer lighter versions for free, get you hooked on their software and then you can upgrade for a price. Now, software companies have gotten smarter. Those that offered more in the way of convenience or ease of use also came with price tags. Their software was too specific and too limited. Over the past decade, many of those early electronic lab notebooks (or ELNs) have come and gone. We weren’t constantly attached to our devices and so the idea of an electronic device replacing our trusty paper notebooks was simply unrealistic. No one had smart phones, at least none of us actually working in the labs. At the time, we all thought she was crazy. Ten years ago, when I was working as a research associate in the biotech industry, someone suggested we switch to a digital form of notebooks.
